Gracewood Farm & Retreat, LLC's mission is to share with guests a "Bed and Board" (B&B) opportunity to appreciate relaxing country living on an  active horse farm, and experience what it has to offer. You'll be surrounded by nature's beauty, native wildlife, and friendly Paso Fino horses, while staying in the beautiful and lovingly restored 1898 farm house or the adjoining carriage house suite.

On the scenic farm retreat, guests may take a stroll around the flower gardens, or hike down the hill through the mature woodlands. Discover the bubbly running creek in the wet season with small waterfalls over the rocks in the along the varied terrain on the land. Note that it can be an invigorating hike back up the hill if you go all the way down. Take your time to enjoy nature! One of the favorite views of guests is from the large gazebo of the back pastures, distant horizon tree line, and the nearby pond with a water spray under the shade of the tall trees.  There are equestrian and walking trails on the farm's woodlands.

There are three "Bed & Board" (B&B) guest bedrooms in the main house and the two bed room suite (with sitting area, kitchenette and deck) in the upper level of the carriage house. The "board" part of the B&B is for guests who may desire to bring their horse with them to lease a stall in the horse barn. There are well established regional equestrian trails, such as the Moss Foundation in Southern Pines or at Hoffman Forest. You may wish to take private lessons with the farm's riding instructor Lynn Gallup.

History, Folklore and Trivia about Carthage

The town of Carthage was the home of the Tyson Buggy Company, a predominant cart and buggy manufacturer in the 1800s. A common story told by residents is that after the closing of the Tyson Buggy Company, Henry Ford was interested in buying the old plant and converting it into a car assembly line. According to the legend, the owners refused to let Ford buy the plant and so he moved on to build a plant in Detroit. This story is often repeated despite a lack of evidence, and runs contrary to the established pattern of Ford (who was born and raised in Detroit) starting all of his businesses in Detroit. A few years afterwards, the Tyson Buggy plant burned down.

Another common story of folklore is that the town was originally to be the home of the University of North Carolina. In this story, however, city leaders determined that they didn't want the university built there. City leaders told the State that Carthage was on too steep of a hill for locomotives to climb and that access to the University would be limited if built there. This often-repeated story fails to take into consideration the fact that locomotives were not invented until two decades after the university had been built in Chapel Hill.

The town now has an annual event that takes place every Mother's Day weekend in May called the Buggy Festival. This event is used to showcase the history of the town as well as show off local musicians, classic cars, hot rods, old tractors, old buggies made by the Tyson Buggy Company, and crafts from potteries in the surrounding areas. This event takes place in the town square around the Old Court House, considered to be a historic landmark.
